Russian Golden Ring

The famous Russian tourist route called the "Golden Ring" for a reason. The route leads through the oldest Russian cities, with the most ancient cultural monuments and historical places. The term "Golden Ring" appeared more than 30 years ago thanks to the essays in the newspaper "Soviet Russia." The golden ring is composed of eight major cities.
 
If you look at the cities on the map, it becomes clear why the tourist route is called exactly like that. The cities form a kind of a ring to the North-Eaast of Moscow.

It is said that the best way to understand and know the great Russia is to travel to its Golden Ring. Golden Ring towns preserve the historical and architectural monuments of ancient Russia. The Golden Ring consists of eight cities - Sergiev Posad, Pereslavl, Rostov, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Ivanovo, Vladimir and Suzdal. The route along the "Golden Ring of Russia" is suitable for any time of the year. Traveling along the Golden Ring allows all those interested in history, culture and present-day Russia, to learn the ancient capital and other cities, in which the centuries have left their mark.

The Golden Ring of Russia and its history is very rich. Many books are devoted to the history of The Golden Ring, but at the same time, the history is very tragic - because of the indifference of people and due to construction activities, many unique monuments of culture and history are lost. However, most of the monuments are preserved and protected by UNESCO and Russian State.

The Golden Ring is famous for its folk art masterpieces. The museums of many cities gathered samples of ancient crafts: woodcarving and bone products, skilful lace and jewelry, and lacquer miniature painting on enamel, and more. If you are going to travel around the Golden Ring of Russia, it should be given for at least two days to get acquainted with each of the cities. It is better to travel by car. You can find a hotel and you won`t be tied to any of the tour routes which are prepared in a hurry.

In the cities of the Golden Ring of Russia all the stages of ancient Russian architecture are presented: the great white stone temples of 12-13 centuries, the tent structures from the 16th century, the buildings of the 17th century, the creations of architectural schools of Rostov, Yaroslavl, Kostroma, Vladimir.

So, more about each of the cities included in the Golden Ring .. Let's start with the Rostov the Great, as it is one of the oldest cities in Russia. Rostov the Great - the most popular city of the Golden Ring. A huge cultural potential of the city has made it one of the biggest tourist centers of pilgrimage. Rostov is included in a special program of cooperation between the Council of Europe and Russia to preserve the historical and cultural heritage. One of the most important monuments is already the landscape of the lake basin and the surrounding area, rich in archaeological sites. The construction of the former home of the Bishops of the XVII century Rostov Kremlin has become one of the main attractions.
 
Colossal value is stone and wooden buildings in Rostov XVIII-XX centuries. The heritage of world culture are Rostov Bells - a set of musical works XVII-XIX centuries., Inseparable from an outstanding musical instrument - the famous bell tower in Rostov. Each of the 13 bells of the belfry, from the largest, weighing 32 tons, to the smallest sounds in a special way.

The next city in the Golden Ring of Russia is Sergiev Posad. The city is famous above all by the ensemble of the monastery of the Trinity-Sergius Lavra, which consists of more than 50 buildings. The earliest construction of the monastery is cross-domed Trinity Cathedral of white stone, built in 1422 on the site of a wooden church of the same name, one of the few surviving examples of the Moscow white-stone architecture of XIV-XV centuries. An architectural ensemble of the monastery is formed gradually around Trinity Cathedral.  All the attractions of Sergiev Posad in some way connected with the Trinity-Sergius Lavra. The city is really unique, and each year attracts thousands of tourists.

Pereslavl is famous for one of the first white stone churches of the North-Eastern Russia. Pereslavl comes with a rich historical and cultural heritage. The sightseeings of Pereslavl are the monuments of church architecture: six monasteries and nine churches. The city wall is preserved in the center of Pereslavl surrounding the historic center of the city. Along the Trubezh river streches the Fishing Settlement. At 2 km north-west of Pereslavl is found an archaeological monument "Kleshchinsky complex". The center of the complex is an ancient city Kleshchin where the ramparts of the XII century preserved. An object of pagan worship the Blue Stone is also remained. It is a large boulder in dark blue weighing 4 tons.


Yaroslavl is the oldest city of the Golden Ring of Russia, one of the most beautiful cities of the Volga region. On the territory of Yaroslavl is about 140 monuments and attractions. The brightest attractions in Yaroslavl are Spaso-Preobrazhenskiy Monastery and the Church of Elijah the Prophet. Since 2005, Yaroslavl is one of 23 UNESCO World Heritage sites in Russia.

Kostroma is also included in the Golden Ring of Russia. In the old part of the city the historic structure plan is preserved (master plan was approved by Empress Catherine II in 1781). The basis of the plan of the city is radial grid of streets, the center of Kostroma is disclosed in relation to the Volga river. The most significant monuments of Kostroma are the Ipatiev Monastery, founded in 1330s, Epiphany-Anastasinsky monastery and shopping arcade.

Have you ever heard of the city of brides Ivanovo? If you have not heard, you have not had the opportunity to travel around the Golden Ring of Russia. In architectural terms, Ivanovo best known monuments belong to the era of constructivism (30-ies of XX century.): A house-boat, house shoe, etc. A large number of historical and architectural monuments were built in Ivanovo, giving the town an original sight. The center of the town is very interesting consisting mostly of former merchants houses of XIX and early XX centuries. The specific interest is the industrial architecture of the XIX century. (in virtually untouched several textile mills of this period, but there is limited free access). If you are interested why Ivanovo was named "The city of brides" then that`s another story.


Vladimir is also included in the approved list of cities of the Golden Ring. There are 239 protected buildings of XVIII-XIX centuries in Vladimir.
